Rico Labao, mostly known for her drag named EVIE, is an inspiring figure in the realm of art and self-discovery. As an actor and director, EVIE has created her own unique path, transpiring the colors of her multifaceted identity to shine her pride. While pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education at Cavite State University, she has become a beacon of inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ community.

At just 21 years old, she has already made a profound impact on the stage which became evident on her renowned drag named “EVIE” — also a short film directed by Mark Asuncion. The drag short film found its way to exhibits such as “Pista ng Sining: ART CAMP” and “DRAVANGANZA: Unleashing your Inner Drag,” an event of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas Communication and Media Society. Although she explores various forms of artistic expression, theater remains her true passion as she finds solace in the raw energy and emotional connection that live performances offer.

While she may not consider herself an outspoken advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, she believes that acts of pride and visibility can shape acceptance and understanding. Through her involvement in events and projects, such as her role in the EVIE drag film, she expresses herself freely and embraces the world of drag queens—a newfound passion she treasures.

EVIE credits her friends for influencing her journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Despite expressing abundantly within the bounds of artistic circles, she still finds herself struggling on revealing her sexuality to the family, fearing for an unwanted reaction. This ongoing struggle hinders her ability to experience the same liberation she feels among the like-minded individuals.

Reflecting on the progress of the queer community, EVIE sees an opportunity to further raise awareness and advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights through her art. She encourages aspiring artists to explore and express themselves using their own platforms to proudly represent the queer community.

EVIE’s message to those who are hesitant in opening their sexuality is to embrace self-expression and to not let the fear of judgment hold them back. By gaining confidence in their artistic endeavors, they can be true to themselves and achieve extraordinary results.

Pride, as explained by EVIE, means waving the flag of the queer community high and proud, which initiates a movement of speaking up and fighting for equality. She advises those who face discrimination to excel in their fields, proving that identities don't define capabilities.

She believes art is a means of understanding and embracing the queer community. Through evocative artwork, she aims to bridge the gap of understanding and touch people's hearts to foster acceptance.

In her journey, EVIE envisions combining her love for theater and becoming a high school teacher. To her future students, she leaves a message of excitement and anticipation for embarking on a creative and inclusive journey together – “Kitakits”.

EVIE, with her talents and unwavering pride, serves as an inspiration to those who strive for authentic self-expression and aim to promote inclusivity. Through art and dedication, she hopes to influence a path for a more accepting society in order to leave a massive impact on the art field, especially to the hearts of the diverse community. Together, let’s fight for a just community!
