Meet Sheena Kirsten Aseniero, a 21-year-old bisexual student pursuing AB Communication, who is creating a dynamic impact in her academic pursuits and dancing career, while inspiring others to gain liberation from conventional societal norms and reach their full potential.
Aseniero’s journey as a dancer introduced her to the LGBTQIA+ community that inspired her to pursue a vibrant and colorful path. The art of dancing allows to express her true identity as a member of the queer community, boosting her confidence.
Notwithstanding, Aseniero faced opposition from her family regarding her sexual orientation, but she remains firm not to hinder herself from career and even in relationships.
Aseniero encourages the LGBTQIA+ community in the dance and cheerleading industry to explore various dance genres without any limitations. She believes that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, should embrace diverse styles.
Melina Alcantara, Aseniero’s girlfriend, emphasizes the importance of comprehending societal norms and deliberately choosing not to conform to them. They navigate their same-sex relationship with love and mutual support.
Aseniero and Alcantara advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights—the former uses her dancing skills to fight for equality and encourage self-expression, while the latter supports individuals in their journey of self-exploration. Together, they challenge prejudice and prioritize happiness as a couple.
The queer couple's message to same-sex couples is to be proud of who they are. “S’yempre, everything is a process. You don’t have to be loud if you don’t want to… pero obviously, be who you are [and] be proud of yourself. And like obviously, we all come from different backgrounds, and it's easier said than done to be loud about your sexuality… to be loud about your partner,” Alcantara expressed sincerely.
Alcantara acknowledges that individuals have different comfort levels in disclosing their relationships. On top of that, Alcantara plans to pursue a legal career to advance LGBTQIA+ rights and provide justice to those whose rights have been neglected.
While everyone else has something to say, Aseniero asserts that LGBTQIA+ members in the dance community should not preoccupy people’s opinion that would hinder them from embracing their true selves.
